As Kevin Costner was told in "Field of Dreams" 'build and they will come', so we experienced for the 23rd Watermelon Festival. We agreed to host the annual square dance festival with hopes that our dancing community would make the trek to Chiefland, FL and sure enough ... they came!
Charlie and I certainly couldn't have pulled off an event of this size alone, so we asked Henry & Mary Britten and their club, the Young at Hearts, for assistance. This small group of dedicated dancers were responsible for the abundant door prizes and delicious food table thoughout the two day event. The area sponsors of Chiefland and Cedar Key were generous with their donations and everyone visiting the festival, whether for one day or the entire weekend, were delighted with their unexpected gifts.
Dancers came from all across the region to enjoy the talents of Bill Chesnut, Lon Ligon and Charlie Pergrossi for square dancing. Raplh Beekman for rounds and Henry Britten & Maxine Thomas with line dancing. What a treat to have Ellis Lindsey call on Friday night for the Dangle Dances and Ed Hauck to cue a few rounds throughout the weekend.
From the responses we've received, everyone had as much fun as we did. We look forward to hosting the 24th Watermelon Square Festival again next year. Mark your calendars for June 4th & 5th, 2010 in Chiefland, FL. You'll be glad you did!
